Read the story behind the art
Sioux Falls Park was spectacular, with waterfalls everywhere, even if it was more touristy than the small-town places I usually look for. I ran and photographed there. I saw a woman resting and eating under a tree; another person beside her would have appeared in the frame as just a pair of legs, so I cropped that out of the finished picture. I built the border from a repeated piece of the tree and kept the color in her hair and shoes. I also removed a trash can from the lower corner. That is how Sioux came together, and I’m pleased with it. The falls were impressive, but this quieter moment stayed with me.

Read about this meal
After walking around the falls, I went to Grille 26 and ordered chicken-sausage tortelloni with broccoli. I’m not usually a broccoli volunteer, but I finished the whole plate. Dipping the bread in the sauce may have helped my enthusiasm considerably. Dessert was strawberry meringue cake with whipped cream, and that disappeared quickly too. The receipt called it key lime pie, but the cake in front of me had other ideas. I’m going with what I actually ate.

My South Dakota run started at Falls Park, the same place where I took the Art photograph. I covered 6.01 miles in 1:05:03, with an average pace of 10:49. The watch recorded only 74 feet of climbing. The waterfalls made the park much more dramatic than its elevation number suggests, and there were plenty of people around. I usually look for smaller, quieter stops, but Sioux Falls gave me a run and a photograph from one place. I can make an exception when the scenery is doing that much work.
