Read the story behind the art
Bethel had been buried in snow during the two days before I arrived. The pile left by the plow in this photograph came up to my chest at its highest; I was standing in the low spot. During my run I turned off the main road and found this barn with hills behind it. That settled the photo question. I used a section of wood above the double doors to make the background around the picture. Snow, barn, hills, and a frame borrowed from the barn itself. I do occasionally make this difficult on purpose.

“At the time, I called this my favorite meal of the trip, narrowly ahead of Exeter’s tortelloni. I was apparently running a very serious pasta competition.”
Read about this meal
After Lenox I wanted a nicer meal, so I picked the little Italian place on Broad Street across from the Bethel Inn. It started with bread and olive oil, then arancini, which I had never tried before. The chicken fettuccine carbonara was the main event. I loved it. I finished with key lime pie because a meal this good deserved a proper ending. At the time, I called this my favorite meal of the trip, narrowly ahead of Exeter’s tortelloni. I was apparently running a very serious pasta competition.

Where I ranBethel Village Motel 88 Main St, Bethel, ME 04217
I set out from the Bethel Village Motel for the Maine run. The watch says 6.27 miles in 1:15:27, averaging 12:01 per mile, with 178 feet of elevation gain. I opened at 10:19 and got slower as the miles went on; mile six took 13:13. There had been a lot of snow in town, including the mound that ended up in my Art photo, and I spotted that barn while running. So even when my legs weren't setting records, the run was doing its other job: finding me something worth photographing.
