Barn Road

Yosemite Engine Company, 716 Depot Street

Barn Road — artwork 1
Read the story behind the art

I spotted this building while running through Chester and immediately thought it would make a good picture. At first I figured it was a barn. It turned out to be the old Yosemite Engine Company firehouse. The red building caught my eye, and the Williams River running beside it gave me the rest of the scene. There were three other old barns or buildings along the road, too, so I called the picture Barn Road. I know the star of it isn't technically a barn. I'm keeping the title anyway. The naming committee can file a complaint.

I left most of the scene in black and white and kept the building red. I also gave it that rough-edged frame I like. Chester was only the second stop, and already I had found a picture while doing the run. This three-part plan might actually work.

The Fullerton Inn started me off with a bread basket, including cornbread. Then came salted pretzels and melted cheese. That sounded like a very good idea until I discovered the pretzels were burnt on the bottom. I ate them anyway, because apparently I am willing to negotiate with a pretzel.

For the main course I ordered Vermont cheese mac and cheese with bacon. The bacon came in big chunks, and so did the portion. There was mashed cauliflower on the side, which I left to live its own life. I finished with a chocolate lava cake, and that part was awesome. I forgot to take a picture of it, so the dessert photo in this journal is an online stand-in. Apparently the cake moved faster than my camera.

The restaurant itself looked very cool, but I didn't care for the meal overall. A nice room, a good dessert, and a dinner that never quite pulled itself together. Chester, I liked your firehouse better.

Where I ranFullerton Inn, 40 The Common, Chester, VT 05143

Chester gave me 6.22 miles in 1:05:19, with an average pace of 10:30 per mile. It was 39°F, and my watch counted 248 feet of elevation gain. I opened with a 9:24 mile, which was apparently my legs making promises the rest of me had not signed. Mile four was 11:21, but I picked it back up a bit by mile six. During the run I spotted that red building by the Williams River, so the outing did double duty: a run for Vermont and the idea for its photograph. Efficiency! Or a sign I was too busy looking at buildings to notice the hills.
