The New Jersey photograph is called Tree Monster. A tree fills the frame above a wooden fence, with branches stretching into a tangle of pink and purple. It looks like something that might ask me for a toll before I can pass. My draft notes for this page were accidentally copied from other states, so I don't have a reliable account of where I found this particular tree. I can show the picture and tell you what is in it. The exact location remains a mystery to my past self’s filing system.

Read about this meal
The New Jersey meal nearly escaped us. Ed and I had walked and run around Frenchtown, and by about 2:30 the breakfast-and-lunch places were closing. We got into the Frenchtown Cafe in time. I had a barbecue burger with fries; the burger was big, the fries average, and the meal just okay. I wished we had realized earlier how soon the restaurants would close. The photos also include lemonade and a pickle, plus butter-pecan gelato from LibbyBeans next door. I left a very blunt original verdict: this was my least favorite meal of the tour so far. I am leaving that review standing.

Where I ranDelaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail 8 Bridge St, Frenchtown, NJ 08825
I started near the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail and ran 5.80 miles around Frenchtown in 1:03:58. The watch gives me an 11:01 average pace and 65 feet of elevation gain. Ed was with me for the New Jersey and Pennsylvania stops, and by the time we looked for lunch here, places were starting to close. The run got done on schedule; the meal became a race against restaurant hours. I would have preferred to save the speed work for my legs.
