Read the story behind the art

Cold Spring was not supposed to happen that day. I had just returned from Delaware, had the day off, and headed toward western Connecticut with my camera because I wanted to photograph a covered bridge in Sharon. Somewhere along the drive I realized Cold Spring was only about twenty minutes farther, so the New York stop moved itself up the schedule. My mother was going to come on the originally planned trip, but the sudden detour was too short notice. I ended up with this riverfront view, which I called Hudstop. Plans are nice. Apparently I also enjoy ignoring them.

Read about this meal

Because New York was an unplanned detour, I was not especially hungry. The previous night’s meal had been substantial enough to cover several counties. At the Cold Spring Depot I kept things simple: New England clam chowder with bacon, followed by a pear salad with blue cheese, cranberries, walnuts, fresh pears, red onion, and truffle-honey vinaigrette. Both portions were bigger than they look in the photographs. I finished them anyway. So much for the theory that I wasn't very hungry.

I made Cold Spring a spontaneous stop, so the run had to join the spontaneous part of the plan. Starting around the Cold Spring Depot, I covered 5.14 miles in 58:50. The watch recorded an 11:26 average pace and 322 feet of elevation gain. The route zigzagged through town, and the riverfront became the photograph for this chapter. I had set out that morning to drive around Connecticut with a camera; by lunch I had also crossed New York off the run list. Not a bad accidental itinerary.
