Newport was not my original choice for Rhode Island. Dean was going to a classical guitar concert, and I wanted to join him, so Newport it was. We walked the Cliff Walk, and I took pictures there as well as around town. I first worked on a fence-and-bench photograph, but it never felt right. This image of a lone person against the rocks and water won instead. It is the first state photograph in the project with a person in it. The title, ‘lone, says enough; the rest can belong to the scene.

Read about this meal

The Red Parrot was packed when Dean and I got there around five. After walking the Cliff Walk, I was ready for food and possibly a chair. We started with chicken quesadillas, sour cream, and salsa. Then I saw Lobster S’Mac-n-Cheese on the menu. I don't like lobster, so I asked if the kitchen could make it with chicken. They checked, they could, and I liked it enough to clean the plate. Dessert was a giant No-Way Jose sundae, which I also finished. There are apparently no limits to what I can accomplish when ice cream is involved.

Where I ranGoat Island Marina
5 Marina Plaza, Newport, RI 02840

I set out near Goat Island Marina and covered 5.54 miles through Newport in 1:01:14. The watch put me at an 11:03 average pace with 152 feet of elevation gain. The route wound past the water and through town before I got back to the rest of the day with Dean. Rhode Island was not the destination I had originally planned, but it gave me a run, a photograph on the Cliff Walk, and a ridiculous sundae. I am willing to accept that change of plans.
