I flew into South Bend around noon and used it as a base for two states: Indiana and Michigan. New Carlisle was a short drive away, so after checking into the hotel I went to scout the town. I had Memorial Park in mind for both the run and the start of my photo walk, but some sort of fair had several streets blocked. I drove the streets I could reach and began plotting a route for the next day. The photograph I eventually called Rustaway grew out of that scouting trip. Apparently even a fair cannot stop me from making an itinerary.

Behind Rustaway
The next morning the fair was gone and the streets around Memorial Park were open again. On my run I spotted an old industrial building, later identified in my notes as Zahl’s Elevator & Feed Mill. That became the subject of Rustaway. Back home I worked on the picture with my mother, mirroring my laptop to her big TV. We spent about an hour and a half trying colors and compositions. She suggested the evergreen green on the door; we matched the wreath to the rusty building, and she came up with the title. She is often better at naming my pictures than I am. I’m happy with how this one turned out.
