Read the story behind the art
California was not originally on this Vegas trip. I considered another night on the Strip or a show, but Donnie talked me into Barstow, and I’m glad he did. During the run I passed the Mojave River Valley Museum and noticed old rusted carts near a tree. That became Sledline. I’m not entirely happy with the wooden border, and only afterward did I realize I had already made a similarly named tree picture in Nevada. I could rename it, but apparently I have decided to be stubborn about this. The California stop stays, title and all.

Read about this meal
I noticed Casa Jimenez while running and came back for my California meal. The chips came with two salsas; I liked the red one better, even though it had plenty of heat. I thought I was ordering soup as an appetizer, and the waitress laughed when I started to order another course. The soup WAS the meal. Then the Cosido beef soup arrived in an enormous bowl, with rice and onions alongside it, and I understood. It was tasty and filling enough that I couldn't finish. The waitress had correctly assessed the situation before I had.

Where I ranDana Park Communit 850 Barstow Rd, Barstow, CA 92311
I started around Dana Park and covered 5.68 miles through Barstow in 1:05:30. My watch shows an 11:31 average pace and 449 feet of elevation gain. During the run I spotted both the museum area that became my Sledline photograph and the Mexican restaurant where I would eat afterward. California was Donnie’s suggestion, and I nearly skipped it. Instead I got a run, a picture, and a bowl of soup so big that it tried to become two courses. He was right; I hate when that happens.
